I have hundreds of stories. I have worked as a medical assistant for over four years, and have completed countless prior authorizations (PA). They’re usually denied for medically infeasible or factually incorrect reasons, sometimes taking weeks or months, and always delaying necessary patient care. I could not have more resentment for a piece of bureaucracy than I do for PAs. As a medical administrator, the burden of prior authorization on my job is suffocating and disheartening. I have spent hours and hours trying to get appropriate care to my patients, sometimes with no availability at all. Tears have been shed.
